The animation below is a simulation of the flow of water when a dam is broken. The simulation demonstrates the use of the VOF method, which will be available in version 8.1 of ADINA.
The VOF method is a surface-capturing method for solving flows possessing multiple immiscible fluids. In the VOF method, a single momentum equation is shared by the fluids, and each of the fluids is convected through the domain by solving scalar convection equations. The surface tension and wall adhesion are simulated with a continuum surface force (CSF) model. The potential applications of the VOF method include stratified flows, free-surface flows, filling, sloshing, motion of large bubbles in a liquid, the motion of liquid after a dam break, hydraulic bore, the prediction of jet breakup, and the steady or transient of any liquid-gas interface.
In this example, a rectangular column of water is confined between two vertical walls, as shown in the figure below. At the beginning of the simulation, the right wall(dam) is removed and water is allowed to flow out on to a dry horizontal floor. The interface between the water and air deforms with time.
