LRT Jakarta Phase 1B: Digital Transformation in Urban Rail Construction

Organization: PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk.

Project Name: LRT Jakarta Phase 1B Digital Construction and Optimization

Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

Project Phase: Completed (date not specified)

Bentley Software: SYNCHRO 4D, iTwin Capture, iTwin Experience, ProjectWise

Additional Context: PT Waskita Karya constructed a 6.4-kilometer light rail extension through a dense urban corridor, overcoming challenges such as confined work sites and complex stakeholder coordination.Ā

Project

The LRT Jakarta Phase 1B project involves the construction of a 6.4-kilometer light rail extension through a dense, active urban corridor. As the main contractor, PT Waskita Karya faced immense challenges, including a narrow and confined work site, the need to build over busy roads and around critical utilities, and the complexity of coordinating multiple stakeholders. The project required a solution that could minimize rework, control costs, keep the project on schedule, and reduce disruptions to the surrounding community. This led to the adoption of a comprehensive digital construction strategy to manage every aspect of the project lifecycle.

Ā Facts

  • Digital construction workflows saved IDR 249.86 billion (USD 14.82 million), including IDR 36.83 billion from clash detection and IDR 210.57 billion from avoiding delay penalties. By improving 4D construction simulation, fuel use was cut by 7,356 liters.
  • Improved data-driven construction coordination led to an 80% boost in data exchange and a 40% drop in modeling time. By leveraging digital twin and real-time visualization tools, Waskita Karya reduced site visits by 20% and streamlined project delivery.
  • Reduced rework and mobilization lowered environmental impact, supporting a more resilient and sustainable urban transport system.

"Digital transformation presents a strategic pathway toward sustainable city development and the seamless integration of smart infrastructure in modern urban environments."

Solution

Waskita Karya implemented an end-to-end digital workflow using Bentley’s digital construction and iTwin products. The process started with high-resolution drone photogrammetry, which was processed in iTwin Capture to create a precise reality mesh of the entire 6.4-kilometer corridor. This digital context model became the foundation for the project’s digital twin. SYNCHRO 4D was at the heart of the execution, linking the 3D BIM models with the construction schedule. Its powerful 4D simulation and dynamic clash detection capabilities were crucial; over 1,200 clashes were identified and resolved before construction, saving millions in potential rework. SYNCHRO 4D was also used to optimize work methods and automatically generate S-curves for progress tracking. ProjectWise served as the common data environment (CDE), and iTwin Experience provided a single, immersive platform for all stakeholders to visualize progress in real-time, which enhanced transparency and reduced the need for site visits.

Outcome

The integrated digital approach dramatically improved project execution, coordination, and efficiency. By identifying conflicts early and optimizing the schedule, Waskita Karya avoided costly rework and penalties for delays, resulting in total savings of USD 14.82 million. The platform provided full transparency, allowing the team to monitor progress against goals, minimize community disruption, and ensure the project was delivered on time without budget overruns. This project has set a new standard for urban transport infrastructure projects in Indonesia.

Software

  • SYNCHRO 4D: Used for 4D construction simulation, scheduling, clash detection, and progress monitoring.
  • iTwin Capture, iTwin Experience: Utilized to create the reality mesh and provide an immersive platform for visualizing the digital twin.
  • iTwin Experience: Utilized for rail network data management and modeling.
  • ProjectWise: Implemented as the common data environment for all project data and collaboration.
